Thompson recognizes Danville students at the Statehouse for being named Indianapolis NBA Rising Star All-Stars

STATEHOUSE (March 16, 2021) – State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) at the Statehouse recently honored a pair of Danville High School students with a House resolution for being named Indianapolis NBA Rising Star All-Stars.

Thompson, a co-author of House Resolution 12, said “Rising Stars” are high school seniors who demonstrate leadership in their schools and communities, and they receive a $2,100 scholarship. Danville students Meg Kirk and Dorothy Pettet were 2 of 21 Indiana students selected for the scholarship.

“Our community is fortunate to have two standout individuals like Meg and Dorothy dedicating their time to serving their neighbors and being good role models,” Thompson said. “Putting the needs of others before yourself is an admirable quality that will take them far in life and in their future endeavors.”

Kirk volunteers with the Indiana Chapter of A Kid Again, a national organization centered on fostering hope, happiness and healing for children with life-threatening illnesses. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council Secretary, and member of the school tennis team and varsity swim team. She is on the honor roll, volunteers for school events and mentors students in the PACE program, which helps students at risk of not graduating high school.

Pettet has been involved with the Jameson Camp since 2015, when she first participated in the Youth Leadership Program before continuing her service and work in a staff position. Pettet is also a member of the CARE Club, social justice club and the National Honor Society. After graduation, she plans to earn a degree and pursue a career in early childhood education, with a focus on working in low-income communities.
