Johnson County – Early Sunday morning around 7:20 Master Trooper Hank Kalina pulled over a red 2011 Dodge Nirto on I-65 southbound near the 96 mile marker for driving 73mph in a posted work zone 55 mph zone. While Trooper Kalina was approaching the vehicle on foot the red Dodge fled southbound at a high rate of speed, Kalina returned to his car and gave chase. The pursuit continued southbound on I-65 for nearly 20 miles until exiting onto U.S. 31 northbound via exit 76. Trooper Kalina was joined in the pursuit by other Troopers as well as officers and deputies from other agencies. The red Dodge continued north on U.S. 31 into Amity, continued into western Shelby County, then into Edinburgh. The pursuit continued around the streets of Edinburgh. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deployed stopsticks in Edinburgh which flattened three tires of the suspect’s vehicle. A short time later the suspect bailed from the car and fled on foot, he was located and apprehended in the back yard of a private residence without further incident.
The suspect is identified as 30 year old William Dilts of Nineveh Indiana. He was incarcerated in the Johnson County Jail on the preliminary charges of Resisting Law Enforcement, Criminal Recklessness and Operating a Vehicle as a Habitual Traffic Violator.
The Indiana State Police is grateful for the cooperation and efforts of the assisting agencies to safely end this pursuit, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Edinburgh Police Department and the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office.
There were no injuries or property damage as a result of this pursuit. This is an ongoing investigation an there is no further information available at this time. Preliminary charges are merely accusations and probable cause for arrest. Formal charges will be determined by the prosecuting attorney. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
