Julia M. Carson Transit Center Opens Sunday, June 26, Triggering System-Wide Route Changes

INDIANAPOLIS (May 23, 2016) – The Julia M. Carson Transit Center will open Sunday, June 26 on the corner of Washington St. and Delaware St. across from the City County Building plaza. The Transit Center will be the new central transfer point for all IndyGo routes driving through downtown Indianapolis. System wide service and schedule changes will impact all 31 bus routes when the Transit Center opens.

More than 700 bus stop sign adjustments will be made throughout Marion County in preparation for the June 26 route changes. The updates include new and eliminated stops, stop relocations, and route changes. Many signs will be updated before the service changes take effect on Sunday, June 26. Operators will stop at all bus stops regardless of what the sign says during this transition.

IndyGo has created a June route changes webpage to help riders navigate how the Transit Center opening and route changes will impact their commute. Printed materials, including June 2016 Route Maps and the full IndyGo System Map, will be available mid-June.

In an effort to prepare riders, IndyGo is launching its Transit Ambassadors program today. Transit Ambassador volunteers will assist riders in understanding how changes to IndyGo routes will impact commutes. The Ambassadors will primarily engage riders near the downtown loop. “We understand that dramatic changes to routes will affect thousands of riders. That is why we are communicating with our customers face-to-face at their bus stop,” stated IndyGo Director of Public Affairs, Bryan Luellen.

Amenities at the Transit Center include 19 covered bus bays with Real Time bus information, public restrooms, indoor waiting area, customer service, pass sales, and free Wifi internet. Dates for the Transit Center ribbon cutting, dedication, and public open house will be announced within the coming weeks.
