Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly today voted to override President Obama’s veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act. The bill would allow foreign governments believed to be involved in terror attacks on U.S. soil to be sued in U.S. courts. The legislation has been long-sought by families of 9/11 victims. The veto was overridden by the Senate with a bipartisan 97-1 vote and is expected to be considered by the U.S. House of Representatives later this week.
Donnelly said, “I voted to override President Obama’s veto of this bill because I believe the victims of terrorism on U.S. soil should have the right to pursue justice and their day in court.”
President Obama vetoed the legislation last Friday evening. Shortly after, Donnelly pledged to override the veto.
