Danville schools to launch new preschool program

The Danville Community School Corporation is now enrolling students for its new Little Warrior Learning Center (LWLC) preschool program for the 2018-19 school year.

Housed inside Danville’s North Elementary School, the mission of LWLC is to provide educational and play-based opportunities that enable children to develop new skills while building peer relations and growing into individual learners.

North Elementary Assistant Principal and Preschool Director Ceara Jackson said LWLC will be a great addition to the Danville Community School Corporation.

“Our play-based program is going to be a hands-on educational opportunity that will connect learning with community involvement, enabling a rich learning experience,” Jackson explained.

LWLC is an all-day preschool program for 3- and 4-year-old children. Tuition covers instructional time as well as childcare from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and two snacks a day. Hot breakfast and lunch will also be available in the cafeteria.

HighScope curriculum will incorporate intentional, play-based teaching and daily learning centers. Instruction will focus on literacy, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), and social and emotional content.

“I am most excited about the in-house field trips we are in the process of scheduling for our preschool students. These will involve different community organizations throughout Hendricks County, allowing for the opportunity to begin molding our children’s community involvement at a very young age,” Jackson added. “Being able to connect learning, play, and community involvement so early in a child’s life is going to be highly impactful to their future in education.”

In addition to the on-site monthly field trips, preschool students will also participate in North Elementary activities such as picture day and the pumpkin run.

Speech and Language Pathologist Kensey Keller has already enrolled her child in the preschool and said she was excited about the addition of LWLC for the Danville community.

“A full day preschool option is something that has not been available in the area before now,” Keller said. “I am thrilled that the preschool will be housed in North Elementary, and the students will be able to take advantage of the incredible learning environment that is already established at North.”

Danville Community High School Assistant Athletic Director Kyle Yoder has also enrolled his child in the program. He said he’s looking forward to having his child be a part of the Danville Community School Corporation, too.

“LWLC will be very beneficial with the different learning opportunities students will experience, such as hands-on education, play-based programs, fields trips and community involvement,” he added. “All of these opportunities will be a huge impact to my child and other students, and will help lead them to be successful in their future.”

LWLC will be in session on teacher workdays, and offers a discount to staff and families with siblings. A full time nurse and counselor are both on site.
