Time is Running Out to File Individual Income Taxes for Free

INDIANAPOLIS (April 12, 2016) – With only six days until the individual income tax season filing deadline, there is still time for qualified taxpayers to file their federal and state income taxes for free using Indiana freefile (INfreefile). INfreefile allows taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $62,000 or less in 2015 to electronically file their tax returns for free. Taxpayers using INfreefile have access to question-and-answer style software through participating vendors – making the filing process fast and easy. Hoosiers may visit www.freefile.dor.in.gov to learn more about the program and to see if they qualify based on the vendors’ options. Qualified taxpayers can choose the vendor of their choice and complete their federal and state return for free. The participating vendors include 1040NOW, H&R Block, TaxAct, TurboTax and OLT Online Taxes. Choosing to file electronically comes with many benefits:

  • Faster refunds Refunds from electronically-filed returns are processed in about two weeks, whereas a paper-filed return can take up to 12 weeks.
  • More secure Fewer people see your personal information.
  • Get more or pay less E-filing software may suggest credits and deductions about which you might not have known.
  • Better accuracy Electronically-filed returns have a two percent error rate versus 20 percent for paper returns.

If taxpayers have questions or concerns about their returns, they should contact the department by calling 317-232-2240 or by visiting www.in.gov/dor/3392.htm.
