Indianapolis, IN – At approximately 5:11 Wednesday morning emergency crews were called to the area of I-465 southbound near Washington Street on the city’s west side for reports of a serious crash. 911 callers were reporting one person was seriously injured and a bystander was performing CPR. When first responders arrived they found a male lying in the roadway unconscious and unresponsive. Despite life saving efforts the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no other reported injuries.
Investigators believe a vehicle had gotten a flat tire and become disabled in the gore point between I-465 and Washington Street. The gore point is an extension of the emergency shoulder that divides the main line of traffic and an entrance or exit ramp. When the driver of the disabled vehicle got out of the car, another vehicle crashed into his car and subsequently hit the man as well. Officers on scene do not believe drug or alcohol use is a factor in this crash, however as protocol with all fatal crashes the drivers involved will be tested. The results of these tests are not available at this time.
The ramp from Washington Street, along with two lanes of I-465 remain closed for the investigation. Those lanes are expected to open within the hour. The Marion County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene to recover the remains of the deceased. INDOT and IMPD assisted with traffic control. Wayne Township Fire Department also assisted with this crash.
