STATEHOUSE (Aug. 20, 2021) – State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) will serve as vice chair of the Interim Study Committee on Pension Management Oversight, which will host its first meeting Wednesday, Aug. 25.
Thompson said the pension committee reviews the annual Indiana Public Retirement System financial report to ensure the state’s public pensions continue to be well funded. They are set to meet at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25 in the Senate Chamber at the Indiana Statehouse.
“Indiana has a reputation for having a strong pension system,” Thompson said. “Despite the financial effects of the pandemic, our pension systems grew in 2020. Hoosiers who plan for their futures can be confident that their investment will be there when they are ready for retirement.”
Throughout the summer and fall, Indiana state legislators serve on interim study committees where they work on policy, examine top issues, gather testimony and recommend legislation ahead of the legislative session kicking off in January. According to Thompson, the Indiana House of Representatives and Senate switch who leads summer study committees. He said Senate lawmakers will serve as committee chairs this year, while House members serve as vice chairs. Thompson chaired the Interim Study Committee on Pension Management Oversight in 2020.
In addition to serving on the Interim Study Committee on Pension Management Oversight this year, Thompson was appointed to the Interim Study Committee on Fiscal Policy, the Distressed Unit Appeal Board, and Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority.
Thompson said members of the public are welcomed to attend and testify at committee hearings, which typically occur at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. Hearings are also livestreamed and archived online at iga.in.gov, where committee calendars and meeting agendas are posted.
