The Deadline is Near: Only One Day Left to File Your 2018 Taxes

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) reminds taxpayers the tax filing deadline for 2018 is tomorrow, Tuesday, April 17. There is still time for taxpayers to file both electronically and through paper forms.

Paper forms require a postmarked date of no later than Tuesday, April 17, 2018 to be considered timely. Electronic filing can be submitted online any time before April 18.

“Nearly 90 percent of Hoosier taxpayers are filing electronically,” said DOR Commissioner Adam Krupp. “Electronic filing is fast, easy and results in a significantly lower error rate compared to filing through traditional paper forms.”

If a taxpayer cannot complete their tax return by the filing deadline, they may apply for a filing extension with DOR or the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). If the federal extension is granted, the taxpayer must file their federal tax return by October 15, 2018 and their Indiana tax return by November 14, 2018.

More information on extension of time to file can be found on the DOR website at https://www.in.gov/dor/4736.htm or the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/extension-of-time-to-file-your-tax-return

Some military personnel are automatically granted extensions. Individuals on active military duty outside of the U.S. and Puerto Rico are automatically granted a 60-day extension period. Military personnel serving in a combat zone are granted an extension of 180 days after they leave the combat zone.

“Remember, if an extension is granted, it only extends the time a customer has to file, not the amount of time to pay taxes owed,” said Krupp.

A payment plan may be an option for individuals who owe $100 or more. More information on payments and billing can be found on the DOR website at www.in.gov/dor/4708.htm.

Customers may call DOR Customer Service at 317-232-2240, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. EST with any questions or concerns.
