Speed Too Fast Sends One to Hospital in Tippecanoe County

Tippecanoe County-Yesterday at approximately 9:00 p.m. on I-65 SB south of the 178 exit to SR 43 a semi slowing for slowed or stopped traffic was rear ended when a car coming up from behind, failed to reduce speed.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Kent Wainscott has shown that a white 2011 International pulling a 2009 Wabash Trailer that are both owned by Swarx Logistics out of Bolingbrook, IL, was in the right lane slowing for traffic.  Construction was going on south of the area and the driver of the International, Alexandru Becciv, 28 of Aurora, IL said he saw the car coming up from behind him and it did not appear to be slowing.  The car, a blue 2013 Hyundai Sonata driven by Scott P. Orr, 47 of Kankakee, IL allegedly failed to slow and struck the rear of the trailer causing both vehicles to come to rest in the right lane.

Orr had to be extricated from his vehicle by the fire department.  He was transported by Tippecanoe County EMS to Franciscan St. Elizabeth East in Lafayette with serious injuries.  Orr was cited for Speed to Fast to Avoid a Collision.  Becciv was not injured.  Seatbelts were used by both drivers and air bag deployment occurred in Orr’s Hyundai.

The interstate was closed for over one hour before the left lane was reopened.  The interstate was reopened completely at approximately 11:12 p.m.

Assisting at the scene were troopers from the Lafayette Post, Tippecanoe County EMS and Jim’s Wrecker Service.
