Washington, DC – Representative Todd Rokita issued the following statement after President Obama announced a plan to close the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
“I served on the conference negotiating team for last year’s National Defense Authorization Act, which was signed into law by President Obama, and explicitly prohibits the transfer of foreign detainees in Guantanamo Bay into any facilities on American soil. We continued this prohibition from previous authorizations because these are dangerous detainees who were arrested fighting American troops and many were plotting terror attacks to kill Americans. Over 100 former detainees in Guantanamo Bay have already been confirmed to have returned to terrorist activities and over 70 more are suspected of having done so. The President’s irresponsible plan jeopardizes the safety of American troops and the general public,” said Rokita.
