Putnam County – The Indiana State Police is investigating a single vehicle crash which occurred late Thursday morning on Interstate 70, westbound near the 42 mile marker, which sent a Jeffersonville, Indiana, man to the hospital.
Preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Troy Sunier indicates at 11:07 a.m., a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette, driven by a Martin Samourian, 55, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 near the 42 mile marker. Samourian, was traveling at excessive speeds, and according to witnesses, weaving in and out of traffic recklessly. Witnesses also state that while Samourian was attempting to pass another vehicle, he traveled into the grassy media of Interstate 70. The excessive speed, and the grassy median, caused Samourian to lose control of his vehicle, sending him back across both lanes of Interstate 70 westbound, striking a guardrail on the north side. The vehicle was then thrown back onto the interstate, spinning uncontrollably several times, before coming to a stop in the middle of Interstate 70.
Samourian was ejected from the vehicle due to failing to wear a seatbelt. He was transported, by Air Evac, to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, with life-threatening injuries.
At this time, this crash remains under investigation pending toxicology results, and reconstruction.
