No Charges Filed in Walmart Shooting After Sheriff’s Department Finds Evidence of Self-Defense

Camby- On 06/02/2024 at approximately 1:44pm Hendricks County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the call of a person shot at 8191 Upland Way in Camby at the Walmart.

Deputies arrived on scene at approximately 1:53pm. At that location, one male was found wounded near a vehicle with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his torso. The wounded male, who was later identified as Matthew Steele, 34, of Indianapolis was provided immediate medical attention and transported to an Indianapolis hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Deputies also detained and questioned a 19 year old male who was involved in the incident. Preliminary reports indicated that there was a verbal and physical altercation between the men prior to a firearm being produced and fired.

After a thorough investigation, there was evidence of self-defense found in this case, and the prosecutor has declined criminal charges in this matter.
