Whiteland, IN – Last night just before 11 o’clock emergency crews were called to I-65 southbound near Whiteland Road for reports of a multi-vehicle crash. The first responders on the scene reported a large crash scene involving approximately 11 vehicles and several injuries. As police and medical personnel sorted through the crash it was determined a total of four people were in need of medical evaluation, one patient was in critical condition and a medical helicopter was summoned to the scene. Three others were transported to area hospitals by ambulance, non with life threatening injuries.
Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionist F/Sgt. Tyler Utterback was called to assist with the investigation. Preliminarily, he believes a tow truck was slowing in the left lane to remove a vehicle from the left shoulder. As the tow truck slowed a black pick-up collided with the tow truck, then was struck by a third vehicle from behind. After the pick-up spun and came to rest in the road it was struck again by a box truck. There were only four vehicles involved in the collision however several other vehicles struck debris in the roadway causing damage. The driver of the pick-up was flown to Methodist Hospital in critical condition, he is expected to survive.All southbound lanes of I-65 were closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage was removed. This crash is still under investigation.
