Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies Involved in Off-Duty Shooting

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s (IMPD) Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) investigating after Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Deputies involved in Officer Involved Shooting.

Just before 1 a.m. on 12/01/2018, officers with the IMPD were dispatched to the 6900 block of W 38th St on an ‘officer needs emergency assistance’ call. Responding officers arrived and located an MCSO Deputy who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. EMS personnel responded and transported the Deputy to a local area hospital in good condition.

IMPD K9 and SWAT conducted a comprehensive ground search of the area for suspects which yielded negative results. IMPD CIRT responded and learned that a confrontation between suspects and deputies occurred inside a restaurant when shots were fired. The suspects then fled the scene.

Investigators are in the process of taking formal statements from all known witnesses.  If additional witnesses exist that have not yet talked with investigators, we urge them to call the IMPD Homicide Office at 317.327.3475

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to the scene to collect forensic evidence.  The shooting is being investigated by IMPD’s CIRT. A separate and independent internal investigation will be conducted by MCSO’s Internal Affairs Unit to ensure compliance with their departmental policy. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is involved and will be consulted throughout the investigative process.
