IndyGo Calls Veterans to Exchange Expiring Free Fare Passes

INDIANAPOLIS (November 21, 2019) —As IndyGo continues to phase in the new MyKey fare system, all Veteran’s Pass cardholders may now visit the Julia M. Carson Downtown Transit Center to obtain a new Veteran’s MyKey card in exchange for their expiring Veteran’s fare pass.

“We are honored to provide free rides to Indianapolis’ Veteran population, and we’re excited to offer our Veterans the opportunity to use our new tap technology,” said Inez Evans, President and CEO of IndyGo, “As we update our fare system, all of our riders should expect upgraded technology and new, flexible options for paying their fare.”

Veterans can visit the Julia M. Carson Downtown Transit Center beginning today to exchange their pass. While Veterans may exchange their pass at any time during Retail Center business hours, there will be additional support to expedite the exchange process during the following times:

  • November 21st & November 22nd: from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • November 25th & November 26th: from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Veterans should bring their existing IndyGo Veteran’s Pass to exchange. There is no fee to exchange cards. There is a five-dollar replacement fee for Veterans without an existing pass to exchange.

Veterans will continue to ride all IndyGo fixed and rapid bus routes for free on the MyKey fare system. Current IndyGo Veteran’s Passes expire at the end of 2019. Starting in January 2020, Veterans will need to be able to tap a MyKey card in order to board a Red Line or local bus.

While IndyGo continues to make improvements to the MyKey fare system, the tap technology for free fare riders is currently functional. The free fare student pilot program is running smoothly and allowing IndyGo to capture enhanced ridership data.

Veterans should come prepared to exchange their cards and provide a few additional details for their account. With over 3,000 Veterans registered, Veterans should anticipate brief delays during the exchange process.
