Hendricks County Park Board Sets Meeting Dates Ahead of Busy 2018

The Hendricks County Park Board has set their meeting schedule for 2018.

With the exception of July, the Park Board will meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. at their main office, located at 955 E. Main Street in Danville. Since the first Wednesday of July is Independence Day, the Board will meet that month on July 11, instead.

All Park Board meetings are open to the public. Meetings generally last between 90 minutes and two hours, and they always include an opportunity for input from the public.

The Park Board has what should prove to be an interesting year ahead of them. One topic of discussion it the plan to open Phase One of W.S. Gibbs Memorial Park, located in the southwest corner of Washington Township, at some point in 2018. Superintendent, Jeremy Weber, has made the construction of Gibbs Park a top priority since his arrival in June of 2016 and construction is set to begin in 2018 after several years of planning.

Another topic of interest is the Town of Plainfield’s pending purchase of about 1,800 acres of land – which includes Sodalis Nature Park – from the Indianapolis Airport Authority, and the slated role in the maintenance of that park under new property ownership. The department helped plan Sodalis Nature Park beginning in 2009, subsequently built it, and has maintained it since it opened to the public in 2011. Throughout all of that time, the land was leased to the Hendricks County Parks and Recreation Department by IAA; however, they are now in the process of selling that land – and additional acreage – to the Town of Plainfield.

McCloud Nature Park turns 15 years old in 2018. The park opened to the public on May 3, 2003, and a public celebration of this landmark anniversary in scheduled for early May.
