Death Investigation Underway at Putnamville Correctional Facility

ISP SmallPutnamville Correctional Facility is currently on lockdown due to an assault and subsequent death of Offender Lawrence Harris DOC#230872. On July 13, 2016 at approximately 5:49 a.m., a radio call was made within the facility for assistance due to an offender on offender assault in a general population dorm. Emergency Medical Services was called.

This incident is pending investigation with the Indiana State Police who have identified two (2) primary suspects believed responsible for the death of Offender Harris. The suspect’s names will not be released until they are formally charged. The suspects have been isolated from the general prison population for their safety and the safety of other offenders. An autopsy of the victim will be performed to determine the official cause of death. Formal charges are anticipated through the Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office.

Offender Harris was born on October 6, 1962 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was currently serving six (6) years for Burglary out of Marion County. Offender Harris was received by Indiana Department of Correction at the Reception Dialogistic Center on January 4, 2013. Offender Harris was released to Marion County Parole on May 23, 2016. Offender Harris was transferred to the Reception Dialogistic Center on a Parole violation on May 31, 2016. Offender Harris was transferred to Putnamville Correctional Facility on July 6, 2016. His earliest projected release date was April 14, 2017.
