The foundation of our country and the freedoms we enjoy today come at a great price. For hundreds of years, brave men and women rushed to the frontlines to protect us. Unfortunately, too many military men and women face a multitude of challenges when they return home. From physical and emotional scars to unemployment and homelessness, our Hoosier heroes need our support.
With the number of homeless veterans rising 6% over the last year, the Indiana House of Representatives is partnering with the Indiana Legion to help homeless Hoosier veterans. We are collecting much-needed food and hygiene items, with the goal of assembling 500 kits for veterans in need, which the Legion will distribute throughout the state.
You can get involved and help out, too. Items are being collected at the Statehouse – just look for the donation bin outside the House Chamber on the third floor. A full list of needed items can be found at www.IndianaHouseRepublicans.com/HelpHoosierHeroes.
Monetary donations are also being accepted, and checks can be made payable to American Legion Department of Indiana. Be sure to include “Homeless Veterans Donation Drive” on the memo line. These donations can be mailed to 5440 Herbert Lord Road, Indianapolis IN 46216.
Any support is greatly appreciated. If you are not able to donate, you can help spread awareness online. We also launched a social media campaign to raise awareness for the growing number of Hoosier veterans facing homelessness and help those in need find support. Follow #HelpHoosierHeroes to learn more about our efforts.
The Legion offers a wide variety of resources to veterans regardless of membership, including help with VA benefits and a new Legacy Foundation, which provides support to service members and their families. Visit IndianaLegion.org to learn more about the resources available to veterans and find out how to give back to these brave men and women.
Like so many Hoosier families, mine knows all too well the sacrifice of having a loved one serve our country. We owe our veterans and those currently serving a tremendous debt of gratitude. Please keep the men and women who serve our country – past and present – in your prayers. To those who serve, thank you, and God bless.
