State Police Investigating Officer Involved Shooting in Carmel

Carmel, IN – At the request of the Carmel Police Chief, and as standard procedure for the Carmel Police Department, the Indiana State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting incident involving a Carmel Police Officer.

Sunday August 11, 2024 at 7:48 p.m. Carmel Police Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a harassment and stalking incident in the 12800 block of Old Meridian Street in Carmel.  A Carmel Police Officer arrived on scene at 7:55 p.m. and began searching the area for the man who was allegedly harassing the caller. Officers received a description of the man along with a possible vehicle description he was known to drive, a blue sports car. At approximately 8:16 p.m. an officer located a blue Dodge Charger on the third floor of the apartment parking garage, it was occupied by an adult male. The officer parked his police vehicle in front of the Dodge. The officer exited his vehicle and began ordering the male occupant to get out of the car. The person inside the car was not compliant with the officers commands. Another officer arrived and the suspect still refused to exit. Moments later the suspect drove forward and struck a Carmel Police SUV. One officer fired shots from his issued handgun through the windshield of the Dodge Charger. The suspect continued to spin his tires while hitting the police vehicle. Officers broke a window to gain access to the suspect, he was pulled from the vehicle and handcuffed. Once out of the vehicle, officers discovered the suspect had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, the officers retrieved medical first aid equipment from their police cars and began rendering emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital and is in stable condition, the injures are reported to be non-life threatening. One officer received a cut to the hand while rendering aid and required medical treatment at a hospital. 

Indiana State Police Detectives, along with ISP Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene to investigate. This investigation is ongoing and the information in this release is preliminary, there is no further information to release at this time. 

Standard protocol of the Carmel Police Department will place the involved officer on critical incident leave pending an internal review.
