IMPD and Special Event Officers Arrest Juvenile With Stolen Firearm Near Canal

INDIANAPOLIS-On Saturday, June 4, 2022, IMPD Special Event Officers (S.E.T) teamed up with the IMPD Downtown District Officers to proactively deter violent gun crime in the Downtown District. This detail focused on the Canal (Colt’s playground), bar district, and surface parking lots.

Utilizing various investigative techniques, officers observed a large group of juveniles carrying handguns in plain view. Those officers attempted to contact the group. However, the individuals began to flee southbound on the canal in attempts to evade police.

Officers set a perimeter in the area to locate the suspects and located a 16-year old juvenile in an alley in the 500 block of N. Senate Avenue fitting the description of one of the suspects. The juvenile was detained and later found to be in possession of a handgun. A check of the handgun revealed it to be stolen locally.

Subsequently, numerous individuals were identified as being the ones who ran from officers however none of them were in possession of firearms. A ballistics k-9 unit was called to the scene and shortly after located a firearm in the 600 block of N. Senate Avenue.

Officers will continue efforts to target illegal activity downtown. Indianapolis residents and guests who want to have a good time and obey the law are encouraged to visit downtown Indianapolis.

The Marion County Prosecutors Office will review the case and make final charging decisions.

An arrest is merely an accusation, and the suspect is presumed innocent until and unless found true.
