Donnelly Commemorates POW-MIA Recognition Day in Indianapolis

Indianapolis, Ind. – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly joined servicemembers, veterans, and families of American prisoners of war and those missing in action at the Indiana War Memorial to honor POW-MIA Recognition Day, which is observed each year on Friday, September 21.

Senator Donnelly said, “It is important to honor and thank our servicemembers every day, but today we all pause to honor and pray for the brave men and women who endured unthinkable hardships as prisoners of war and those still missing in action from conflicts around the world. My thoughts are with the 1,700 Hoosiers still unaccounted for and their families. As a nation, we owe it to these brave Americans to never forget their sacrifice and to never stop working to bring them home. It is part of our solemn promise to never leave our fallen behind.”

As a Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Donnelly is committed to working with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), the Administration, and foreign governments until all prisoners of war and those missing in action are returned home to their families. In June, Donnelly and Senator Todd Young sent a letter to President Trump supporting his commitment to recover and repatriate the remains of American prisoners of war and servicemembers still missing in action from the Korean War, including more than 170 Hoosiers.

National POW-MIA Recognition Day ceremonies are held across the country and on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, at schools, churches, and national Veteran and civic organizations to recognize and honor the more than 82,000 American servicemembers still missing.
