Indianapolis, IN – A secondary crash in the traffic back-up from an earlier crash killed one person. November 19th, at 11:27 p.m., 911 dispatchers began receiving calls of a serious crash on I-465 southbound south of Crawfordsville Road. Upon arrival, first responders found a passenger car had rear-ended a semi tractor-trailer. The driver of the passenger car was pronounced deceased on the scene. The semi driver was not injured.
State Police Crash Reconstructionists are currently on scene along with the Marion County Coroner’s Office. Investigators say the semi was stopped in traffic when the passenger car struck the rear end of the trailer at a high rate of speed. The traffic back-up was caused by a lane closure from earlier multi-vehicle crash near Rockville Road around 8:30 p.m.
All lanes of I-465 southbound are currently closed and traffic is being diverted onto I-74 / Crawfordsville Road. The investigation and clean-up is expected until approximately 2:00 a.m. Several lanes of I-465 southbound are still restricted at 10th Street for the earlier crash where clean-up continues.
There is no further information to release at this time.
