Trooper Escapes Serious Injuries After Being Struck by an Alleged Drunk Driver on I-65

Indianapolis, IN – Trooper Drew Atwell is recovering from injuries sustained when his car was struck by an alleged drunk driver early this morning on I-65 near Southport Road.

Just after 3:00 a.m., Trooper Atwell was investigating a crash with injuries on I-65 southbound at the 103.8 mile marker when his car, with him inside, was struck by a pick-up truck. Atwell’s car, with emergency lights activated, was blocking a lane on I-65 to protect the crash victims and other emergency responders. A 2004 Ford F-150, driven by 38 year old Dustin Boyer of Greenwood, struck the rear of the police car. Trooper Atwell was transported to Eskenazi Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Boyer was not injured, however investigating officers developed probably cause that he was operating under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail.

Trooper Atwell, a one year state police veteran, has been released from the hospital and fortunately did not suffer any serious injuries. The crash is still under investigation and there is no further information to release at this time. Since an arrest has been made, any inquiries about this case shall be directed to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

All suspects are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court
