Traffic Stop Results in Two Men Arrested on Gun and Drug Charges

Indiana State Troopers arrested two Indianapolis men Thursday afternoon after a traffic stop uncovered a loaded handgun and nearly 70 grams of marijuana.  The driver, who was found to be suspended, was stopped for a traffic violation near the intersection of Pendleton Pike and Kercheval Drive in Indianapolis around 12:30 p.m.

Trooper Walter Butt stopped the driver of a green Ford Mustang, Mark Grundy, 21, for speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.  The front seat passenger in the car was identified as 19 year-old, Da’Vonne Hampton.  While talking with Grundy Trooper Butt noticed a strong marijuana smell coming from inside the vehicle.  Trooper Butt utilized his K9 partner Apache who made a positive alert for drugs.

Trooper Corey Berfield searched the Mustang and discovered a .40 caliber Springfield Armory handgun along with a black ski-mask.  Both items were partially hidden.  Berfield also recovered several baggies of raw marijuana hidden behind the center console and radio inside the dashboard.

Grundy was arrested for felony possession and dealing marijuana along with possession of handgun by a felon.  Hampton was arrested for felony possession of marijuana and misdemeanor possession of a handgun without a permit.  Both Grundy and Hampton were transported to the Marion County Jail.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
