Plainfield, IN – Thursday afternoon around 3:30 emergency crews were called to the scene of a serious crash on I-70 eastbound near SR 267. Callers were reporting at least one person was ejected and two others were seriously injured. Upon arrival, first responders found the aftermath of a high speed crash involving a black 2004 Mercury. A 17 year old male had been ejected from the vehicle and was in very serious condition. The 22 year old driver and another 17 year old passenger were both also suffering serious injuries. All three patients were transported to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Investigators believe the black Mercury was driving alongside a black SUV when the vehicles made side-to-side contact. The collision caused the Mercury to spin out of control and strike the guardrail. The black SUV fled the scene. Neither of the 17 year old passengers were wearing a seat belt which caused one to be ejected and another to suffer injuries consistent with being tossed around inside the vehicle. Police are seeking any information about a black SUV with damage to the front driver’s side.
State Police Crash Reconstructionist Trooper Chris Hanson was called to assist with the investigation. I-70 eastbound was closed for nearly an hour while the crash was investigated and the wreckage was removed.
The 22 year old female driver, along with the 17 year old female passenger are listed in stable condition at Methodist Hospital. The 17 year old male who was ejected is listed in critical condition.
There is no further information to release at this time. Anyone with information about the crash, or the black SUV that fled the scene is asked to call the Indiana State Police at 317-899-8577.
