BRAZIL, IND. (June 27, 2018) – Skills learned at previous Sheriffs’ Youth Leadership Camps will be put to the test later this year when a group of former campers will be asked to serve on a new Student Advisory Council for the program’s permanent home.
“Two dozen teens from across the state will be asked to give guidance on proposed facilities, programs and policies of our new Indiana Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch being developed in rural Clay County between Greencastle and Terre Haute,” said Grant County Sheriff Reggie Nevels, who serves as the not-for-profit’s board secretary and chairs ISYR’s Construction and Operations Committee.
Nevels said the Youth Ranch will host a day-long meeting of camp alumni in late summer or early autumn to review drawings and layouts of two styles of cabins, a peace chapel, dining hall, horse stable, first aid station, computer lab and locker rooms.
Student advisors will also review proposed recreation areas, including a zipline, confidence course, archery range, baseball and softball field, basketball court, sand volleyball, docks for canoeing, kayaking and fishing.
“Because we will be owning instead of renting our camp venue, we plan to expand our camps from three days to five days and from two weeks to seven weeks each summer,” Nevels said. “This affords us the opportunity to greatly expand our safety curriculum. Before our board of sheriffs takes final votes on facilities, programs and policies, we want to hear from both our camp alumni and our deputies who serve each year as volunteer counselors.”
