One Person Dead in Sullivan County Highway Vehicle Crash

Sullivan County—Thursday morning at 7:46, Indiana State Police and Sullivan County emergency agencies responded to a motor vehicle crash on County Road 700 South, just east of County Road 300 East. The crash injured the driver and claimed the life of the passenger, both county highway employees.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Sullivan County 2003 International 4200 highway dump truck, pulling an asphalt trailer,  was eastbound on CR 700 S just east of CR 300 E; when the right side trailer wheels are believed to have traveled off the south side of the roadway, thus causing the truck to also travel off the south side of the roadway. The driver, 63-year-old Donald D. Samm of Hymera, IN. attempted to regain control, overcorrected, traveled back across CR 700 S, off the north side of the roadway, and into a creek striking a tree. 

Donald D. Samm was airlifted with possible internal injuries to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by IU Health Medical helicopter, after a lengthy and rigorous extrication by Haddon Township Fire/Rescue. Family notified. 

A passenger in the truck, 69-year-old Larry G. Pigg of Dugger, IN. was pronounced deceased at the scene by Sullivan County Coroner Mary Ann Dudley. Family notified. 

The crash is being investigated by ISP Master Trooper Polly Blackburn. Assisting are ISP crash re-constructionists from the Bloomington Post, Sergeant Kris Fitzgerald, Trooper Justin Bell, Sheriff Clark Cottom and deputies, Sullivan County EMS from Carlisle and Sullivan, Haddon Township Fire/Rescue, Sullivan County Coroner Mary Ann Dudley, Wabash Valley Correctional Facility Fire, and numerous bystanders assisted until arrival of emergency services.
