Indianapolis man arrested after weekend shooting that injured a 6 year old child

INDIANAPOLIS – On Saturday August 8, 2015 at 9:20 a.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to a call of a person shot inside a vehicle that occurred at Westlane Road and Harcourt Road on the city’s north side. After the shooting, the victim was driven several blocks east to West 73rd Street and Ditch Road where officers located the 6-year-old victim inside the vehicle along with the driver of the vehicle who was not harmed. The victim suffered a gunshot wound with the entrance to the back center of his neck with the exit wound behind the left ear. The victim was transported to Riley Hospital for Children in serious, but stable condition.

On Sunday, August 9, at approximately 5:45 p.m., investigators with the Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) detained the potential suspect, identified as 35-year-old Sergio Garcia-Zarates, for questioning without incident. After being interviewed by investigators, Garcia-Zarates was outright arrested and preliminary charged with Aggravated Battery, Criminal Recklessness and Carrying a handgun without a license. He was transported to the Adult Processing Center. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make a final charging decision on the case.
