Indiana State Police Investigating an Inmate Death at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility

Sullivan County – July 20, 2020, Indiana State Police Master Trooper Detective Jason Schoffstall initiated an investigation at the request of the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility and Sullivan County Prosecutor Ann Smith-Mischler, into the death of inmate Kevin J. Carpenter, age 57, of Churubusco, Indiana.

On July 19, 2020, at approximately 5:40 a.m., members of the Wabash Valley Correctional staff found Carpenter unresponsive in his cell and immediately began administering first aid, but the efforts were to no avail.  Investigators suspect foul play and are treating the death as a homicide.

Carpenter had been incarcerated within the Indiana Department of Corrections since February of 2011.

An autopsy was conducted this morning at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.  Final results are still pending.

This is an active investigation.  No further information will be released at this time.

Detective Schoffstall was assisted by Master Trooper Detective Ryan Winters, CSI Sergeant Michael Organ, Internal Affairs for the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, and the Sullivan County Coroner’s Office.
