IMPD Officers helpful push home sparks help from community after local news story

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) North District Officers assistance to wheelchair bound citizen, sparked the community to reach out and get a new power wheel chair donated to the man after a local news story aired about the need.

On 03/13/2019, North District IMPD Officers Cauley and Smith, presented a new power wheelchair to Mr. George Morgan after meeting him last month and helping him home.

These officers first met Mr. Morgan in late February, when his old wheelchair broke down, and they helped push him several blocks in the snow to get back to his apartment at Aspire Indiana in the 6800 block of Township Line Rd.

How did the event come about? Local media did a story about these two Officers helping Mr. Morgan back in February and then members of the community took action.

A community member, Jim Hope, saw the story and then contacted John Boggs, who works closely with IMPD, and asked how he could help Mr. Morgan with a permanent solution to his defective wheelchair.Mr. Boggs contacted Sgt. Sibley and she tracked down the names of the two involved and helped coordinate their contact with the citizens.

Jim then put John in contact with the Bally Foundation, a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization, that specializes in providing specialized equipment to individuals facing special challenges such as this. John then contacted Janice at Aspire Indiana, who helped coordinate the surprise to present the power Wheelchair to George.

This is a great example of human kindness and what the community, police, and media can accomplish when we work together! The IMPD would like to thank everyone involved in this endeavor and for their support and efforts making Indianapolis a safer place to live, work, and play!
