IMPD Officer Involved Shooting on Southwest Side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – The following information is preliminary and may change as the investigation progresses. On January 18, 2019, just after 6:30 p.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) were dispatched on an armed robbery in progress at the EZ Pawn located at 3376 W. 10th Street.  As officers arrived three suspects walked out of the business when confronted by arriving officers one of the suspects turned toward the officer pointing a firearm at him, at which point the officer fired a shot.  The three men fled on foot through the neighborhood. Officers quickly set up a perimeter while K9 and SWAT officers searched for the suspects who have not been apprehended at this time.

Robbery detectives were on scene to investigate the armed robbery that did occur, Indianapolis Marion County Forensic Services also responded and assisted in recovering property believed to be used to commit the robbery.  The property believed to have been taken during the robbery has been recovered. Now, there is no physical evidence that support whether or not any of the three suspects were struck by the officer when he was forced to fire his duty weapon. No officers have been reported injured during this incident.

As is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting, IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a parallel investigation to ensure compliance with departmental policy. The involved officer will be placed on Administrative Leave as the investigation is conducted, and will have access to IMPD’s wellness program for coping assistance during this time.
