IMPD Officer Discharges Firearm Resulting in Injury

On Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at approximately 11:45 pm, IMPD Southeast District officers responded to a disturbance in the 100 block of Villa Avenue.  While on scene, multiple dogs charged at the officers.  One officer discharged his firearm striking a dog and striking an individual in the hand who was attempting to corral the dogs.  Officers provided medical treatment to the individual who was shot and that individual was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in good condition. 

The dog died on scene.  One officer was bit by a dog, evaluated for their injuries, and not transported.  No other individuals were injured during the incident.

Officers were wearing body cameras and they were activated during the incident.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency is assisting with this investigation.  A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD’s Internal Affairs.

The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory review of this incident.  This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal investigative process.

The Police Officer Support Team (POST) responded to provide peer support for officers.
