IMPD Homicide detectives make arrest in case from September 2018

INDIANAPOLIS –  Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Homicide detectives identify and arrest suspect allegedly involved in shooting death of a man on 09/29/2018.

Just after 6:30 p.m. on 09/29/2018, Officers with the IMPD were dispatched on a report of a person shot.  When officers arrived, they located an adult male victim, later identified as Arnell Davis (40), who appeared to have been shot.  Indianapolis EMS personnel responded and pronounced Davis dead on-scene.

Homicide detectives responded and immediately began canvassing the area for witnesses. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to assist in identifying and collecting potential forensic evidence. During the course of the investigation, detectives developed probable cause for the arrest of Keith Smith (36), for his alleged involvement in the shooting death of Davis. Smith was already in-custody on an unrelated case and was formerly charged with murder on 02/13/2019 as related to the death of Davis.

This incident should serve as a message to those seeking to commit violence in Indianapolis, that they will be held accountable. The IMPD ended 2018 with a homicide clearance rate of 64%, more than 20% higher than the previous year. Violence will not be tolerated by IMPD or the Indianapolis community.

A charge of a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
