Hendricks County Recycling District Receives Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence

The Hendricks County Recycling District was recently recognized with a 2024 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence at the Indiana Partners for Sustainability’s Annual Conference and Tradeshow in Indianapolis for its Lizton Recycling Center.

The Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence are Indiana’s most prestigious environmental recognition awards. They are reserved for the most innovative, sustainable, and exemplary programs or projects that positively impact Indiana’s environment and demonstrate measurable environmental, economic, and social benefits. The selection process is highly competitive.

Representatives from Hendricks County Recycling District, Dan Bridget (middle left) and Lenn Detwiler (middle right) met with Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb (right) and IDEM Commissioner Brian Rockensuess (left).

“It’s rare to have multiple awards for a single category, so I am especially proud of this year’s recipients and their dedication to bringing Indiana to the Next Level by creating solutions that impact the quality of life in their communities. Their work forever stands as a true testament to the spirit of Hoosier innovation,” said Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb.

The District was honored in the Land Use and Conservation category for constructing the new recycling center on a brownfield site, which was previously a filling station with a leaky underground storage tank. After the tanks were removed and the property was remediated, it remained unused for many years.

The Lizton Recycling Center is free to use and is open 9am – 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1pm – 7pm on Wednesdays, and 9am – 3pm on Saturdays. More information is available at RecycleHC.org.

Since opening in April of 2023, the Lizton Recycling Center has been visited more than 36,000 times and has collected more than 425 tons of clean, valuable recyclables from residents.

Lenn Detwiler, the Recycling District’s executive director said, “The District’s Board and staff were committed to providing a better way for our residents to recycle, and we’ve done that. We’re proud of the new recycling center and the feedback we’ve gotten from the public has been overwhelmingly positive. We’re humbled to receive the Governor’s Award for the center and are excited to get more members of our community out to the recycling center.”

The Hendricks County Recycling District is dedicated to promoting recycling, waste reduction, and responsible waste management within Hendricks County.
