Farmers and Fishermen Tax Extension

According to the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), qualifying farmers and fishermen will be required to file their annual return and make their federal and state tax payment by April 15, 2019. This is an extension of the March 1, 2019 deadline.

Generally, taxpayers are required to pay federal and state income taxes as they earn income if these taxes are not withheld from wages, and require an estimated income tax payment on a quarterly basis. Farmers and fishermen are subject to different rules for estimated tax payments.

A taxpayer qualifies as a farmer or fisherman for the 2018 tax year if at least two-thirds of the taxpayer’s total gross income was from farming or fishing in either 2017 or 2018. For more information, DOR customers may call Customer Service at 317-232-2240, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST. Tax practitioners are encouraged to call the Practitioner Hotline at 317-233-4017.
