Elderly man killed in head on collision on Indianapolis’ south side

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers responded to an accident with entrapment just before 7 a.m. Wed. in the 8000 block of Madison Ave near Stop 11.

According to officers, two SUVs were involved in a head on collision in the southbound lanes of Madison Avenue. A green SUV headed norhhbound on Madison Avenue crossed the center line and hit a southbound blue SUV head on.

Both drivers had to be extracted from their vehicles by the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD).  EMS medics pronounced the driver of the blue SUV – an elderly male identified as 77-year-old Melvin Voss of Indianapolis – dead on scene. The driver of the green SUV, a younger female, was transported to Methodist Hospital in serious condition.

IMPD accident investigators responded to the scene for interviews and scene processing. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, however investigators do not believe intoxication was a factor. A blood draw will be taken from the driver of the green SUV, as is standard procedure for any accident resulting in a fatality.
