DUI Traffic Stop Leads to Police Pursuit and Fatal Crash

PLAINFIELD – On July 2, 2022, at approximately 1320 hrs., Plainfield Police Officers responded to a report of a possible intoxicated or impaired driver in a black Chevrolet Malibu heading westbound on Main Street at Clarks Road.

The vehicle was reportedly driving erratically and all over the roadway. The officer observed the vehicle traveling westbound, swerving, and committing traffic violations. The officer activated his emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop at U.S 40 and Cartersburg Road. After the vehicle came to a stop, officers approached the vehicle and observed fresh paint transfer from a recent crash. The fresh paint transfer and damage led officers to believe the suspect vehicle may have also been involved in a hit and run crash. The driver was the sole occupant and was requested to exit the vehicle by an officer.

The driver disregarded and fled from the traffic stop initiating a vehicle pursuit. The suspect vehicle continued westbound on U.S 40 entering Putnam County. The suspect vehicle left the roadway resulting in a crash near County Road 550 E. and U.S 40. The driver was pronounced deceased on scene of the crash and identification will not be released until next of kin have been notified.

The Indiana State Police completed the accident reconstruction and will conduct a thorough investigation of the crash. Further information will be released after the investigation is complete and notification to kin has been made.
