DANVILLE, IN — Congressman Todd Rokita released his latest School Safety Report, encouraging students, parents, faculty, and community members to get involved in making schools safer. The new report identifies the best practices from the school safety discussions featured at Rokita’s third School Safety Summit which took place in November. The release of the School Safety Report coincides with President Trump’s roundtable discussion today at the White House on the Federal Commission on School Safety Report.
This is Congressman Rokita’s third School Safety Report as a result of three separate School Safety Summits addressing topics ranging from keys to school safety, cyberbullying, and the opioid epidemic. Serving as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, Rokita has committed his time in Congress to help our children succeed in school.

“As a parent, a community member, and a member of Congress, there is nothing more paramount than providing safety and security for future generations of Hoosiers,” said Congressman Todd Rokita. “By bringing together students, parents, faculty, community leaders, and experts, we can continue the important discussion of how we keep our children safe, while equipping our school’s teachers and faculty with the best practices and resources to keep our schools secure.”
Rokita continued: “President Trump and leaders in Washington are taking steps to help secure our schools, but the best practices and the most successful tools for keeping our children safe are found right here in our communities in Indiana.”
Four of the key takeaways and best practices identified at the 2018 School Safety Summit:
- Create intervention teams to prepare for any possible threats
- Develop and improve reporting methods
- Encourage schools to have pre-planning action plans
- Establish rigorous methods for recognizing threats
The Congressman has now held three School Safety Summits where moderators, panelists, and participants from around Indiana discussed the issues concerning security threats, assessment tools, and students well-being within our education facilities. All three summits have resulted in thorough best-practice reports that can be found online.
