Coats Votes to Block Flawed Water Rule

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) today voted for a joint resolution of disapproval (S.J. Res 22) under the Congressional Review Act to block the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) flawed Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule and stop the agency from issuing similar rules. The joint resolution of disapproval passed the Senate 53 to 44.

“This resolution sends a message to the Obama Administration that the WOTUS rule must be withdrawn and revised to more reasonably protect our waters and address national concerns with this rule,” said Coats.

On November 3, Senator Coats voted in favor of invoking cloture on a motion to proceed to the Federal Water Quality Protection Act (S.1140). This bipartisan bill would have required the EPA to withdraw the WOTUS rule and issue a more reasonable rule in line with Congress’s express intentions. The cloture vote on the motion to proceed failed 57-41, with 60 votes necessary to move forward.
