INDIANAPOLIS – Just after 1:30 a.m., on May 7, 2020, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) North District were called to a burglary-in-progress near 2200 Woodglen Drive. Upon arrival, four IMPD officers approached the apartment. As they were approaching the residence, officers observed a male outside of the apartment they were dispatched to. The male immediately began firing at the officers with a rifle. All four officers returned fire, striking the male. Once the scene was secure, IEMS arrived pronounced the male deceased on scene. No officer was injured during this incident.
Investigators from the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) along with a deputy prosecutor from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) have taken the lead on the criminal investigation, standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting. IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a parallel but separate investigation to ensure compliance with departmental policy. An Executive Review of this incident will occur after the internal and external investigations are complete.
