Brownsburg – It’s taken a long time but the North Green Street reconstruction project appears to have crossed the finish line! The Town of Brownsburg had a Ribbon cutting ceremony on June 17 in the afternoon, just in time for 5 o’clock traffic. The Ribbon cutting took place just south of the railroad crossing in Brownsburg. A small celebration with refreshments and music took place at the Union Green Common space afterwards.
The opening finally links Brownsburg’s current downtown, a small business district that has seen many of its original buildings disappear over time, to the new developments just about three blocks north of Main Street. The town has been growing over the past decade, almost double in population since 2010, and much of the new retail and commercial development has been focused about a mile north near the I-74 exits.
Brownsburg Town Councilman Chris Worley was on hand for the event and said it’s bigger than just having the railroad tracks passable.
Not just to have it open of course, we’ve all been waiting a long time for this, but it’s been done right. It’s going to be wide, it’s got the turn lanes, and it’s definitely going to improve things. I know these residents want access to the new businesses, the main office park nearby, and inside the Park. Yes, we wanted to make sure everything was done right and there were some delays, with the weather. We’ve all had construction delays around Central Indiana. But this is a super Community turn out here. It’s big! It’s big!
The new Green Street project has not gone without criticism by some town residents and business owners, but Town officials say it will give them an opportunity to recreate a pedestrian-friendly downtown-style atmosphere, while bringing new and much-needed residential and retail options.
