Avon, Brownsburg, and Bethesda Christian high schools receive Advanced Placement Awards from Indiana Department of Education

INDIANAPOLIS – Avon High School, Brownsburg High School and Bethesda Christian School were among those The Indiana Department of Education announced today as the 2017 Advanced Placement (AP) Award recipients. To be selected, schools must have at least 25 percent of their 2017 graduating class receiving a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP exam.

“Research shows access, participation, and success in AP courses prepares students for the rigors of higher education,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. “I am proud to say Indiana schools are providing preparation for future opportunities for our students. I applaud the success of each student and school who worked hard to meet the rigorous demands of Advanced Placement work.”

AP is a research-based program designed to facilitate student participation and success through delivery of college-level courses and corresponding exams in the high school setting. Qualified students who pass AP courses enroll in college at higher rates, require significantly less remediation, and have higher first-year grade point averages and credit hours earned than other groups of students. For the 2016-2017 school year, 12,270 graduating students passed at least one AP exam with a 3 or better. This is an increase of three percent from the prior year, and an increase of 120 percent over the past 10 years.

An award ceremony will take place today, June 12, 2018, from 1:30-3:30 PM (ET) in the North Atrium of the Indiana Statehouse. The ceremony is open to the public and media is encouraged to attend.
