Coats Calls for Defunding of Planned Parenthood on Senate Floor

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) today spoke on the Senate floor and called for a vote on ending federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

“We need to let Planned Parenthood know that the American people do not support these inhumane practices,” said Coats. “Congress should vote, and vote soon, to end federal funding for Planned Parenthood.” In his remarks, Coats quoted a July 25, 2015 New York Times column by Ross Douthat. “For those who defend the role of Planned Parenthood, Douthat writes that reflecting on the content of these videos gets you uncomfortably close to ‘that moment when you start pondering the possibility that an institution at the heart of respectable liberal society is dedicated to a practice that deserves to be called barbarism,’” said Coats. “He says that’s a hard thing to accept. But as difficult as that is, Douthat says we must acknowledge that what is being discussed in these videos are ‘human beings that the nice, idealistic medical personnel at Planned Parenthood have spent their careers crushing, evacuating and carving up for parts.’”
