WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) this week was named a 2016 “Fiscal Hero” by the Campaign to Fix the Debt. The award honors members of Congress who work to improve our nation’s fiscal future and address the core drivers of the national debt.
“Our growing debt is putting current and future generations in a perilous situation that jeopardizes both our economic and national security,” said Coats. “In my remaining time in office, I will continue to fight for solutions that address our nation’s fiscal problems.”
“Fiscal Heroes” were selected based on taking fiscally responsible votes, participating in fiscally focused events, pushing their party leaders to make debt a priority, leading bipartisan efforts to work through policy options to fix the debt, delivering floor speeches to raise awareness about the issue, advocating to keep tough choices on the table and introducing legislation to improve the nation’s fiscal position.
“Sen. Coats has worked through a variety of channels to draw attention and find solutions to the nation’s fiscal challenges,” said Maya MacGuineas, head of the Campaign to Fix the Debt. “While many lawmakers have chosen to bury their heads when it comes to these issues, Sen. Coats has shown courage and leadership and has been willing to stand up for what is right for the country – even when it’s not easy to do so.”
“The longer we wait, the more severe and difficult the choices will be to fix the debt,” MacGuineas continued. “Yet very few Members of Congress take this problem seriously. Those who do, like Sen. Coats, deserve our thanks and praise.” The Campaign to Fix the Debt is a nonpartisan movement to put America on a better fiscal and economic path.
