Sheriff’s Office Investigating Fatal Shooting at Camby Walmart

Camby – On 06/02/2024 at approximately 1:44pm Hendricks County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the call of a person shot at 8191 Upland Way in Camby at the Walmart. 

Deputies arrived on scene at approximately 1:53pm.  At that location, one male was found wounded near a vehicle with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his torso.  The wounded male was provided immediate medical attention and transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition where he later died. The man has been identified as Matthew Steele, 34, of Indianapolis. 

Deputies also located a male person of interest at the scene; he is currently detained.  Preliminary reports indicate that there was some type of verbal and physical altercation between the men prior to any shots being fired.  All of these events are currently believed to have happened outside of the store in the parking lot. 

Hendricks County Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.

  1. Why can I not find the name of the shooter in the Camby Walmart shooting 2 weeks ago? Very scary, this used to be a safe area until it started getting too many stores. Doesn’t the public have a right to know who the shooter was and if he’s been arrested? This Walmart is around the corner from me.
