Hendricks County legislators: Apply today for paid internship at the Statehouse

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 28, 2020) – Hendricks County lawmakers encourage local college students and recent graduates looking to gain valuable work experience to apply online for a paid internship with the Indiana House of Representatives at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.

Before the start of each legislative session, House Republicans hire interns to help legislators and staff with the increased workload. State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) said positions are open to sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as recent college graduates, and law school and graduate students.

“Our interns have many opportunities to network with lawmakers, and community and private industry leaders from across the state,” Thompson said. “These connections, along with other skills gained throughout the internship, are beneficial for those looking for full-time positions.”

According to State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis), all majors are welcome to apply online for internships in a variety of areas, including legislative operations, communications and media relations, policy and fiscal policy. Previous political or government experience is not required.

“An internship is an excellent way to stand out from a crowded applicant pool,” Behning said. “Employers are looking for new hires who can hit the ground running, and this program can help. From developing your writing and time management skills to collaborating with others, our internship can further prepare young adults for their careers.”

As an intern with the House Communications Department, Dragonette wrote press releases and e-newsletters, produced podcasts and utilized graphic design. Smith served as a legislative intern and corresponded with constituents, and staffed committee hearings and floor proceedings.

State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) said internships are full-time, Monday through Friday, lasting from January through April in 2021.

“The full-time commitment helps prepare students for meeting the expectations of future employers,” Steuerwald said. “They learn to manage schedules while taking on additional responsibilities as young adults. As majority caucus chair, I meet with all of the interns hoping to enhance the experience for everyone. I look forward to welcoming interns to the Statehouse again in 2021.”

Interns receive biweekly compensation of $750, and can earn academic credit through their college or university. Interns are also eligible for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.

Steuerwald said the legislature may make certain changes to the internship program due to the impacts of COVID-19 and social distancing requirements, but any adjustments will be communicated to candidates and intern hires.

Students should apply before the Oct. 31 deadline online at IndianaHouseRepublicans.com/internship.
