WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) today voted for the Every Student Succeeds Act, bipartisan legislation that would restore education responsibility to states and local school districts and prevent the Department of Education from imposing Common Core or any other federal academic standards on states. The bill passed the Senate 85 to 12 and now heads to President Obama’s desk.
“Indiana educators know best how to teach Hoosier students,” said Coats. “Our education laws should increase state and local control so decisions about our education system are made by those closest to our students. This legislation will fix the broken No Child Left Behind law and end Common Core and federal education mandates.” The Every Student Succeeds Act would:
- End the Common Core mandate
- End the need for federal waivers
- End federal test-based accountability
- End national school boards
- Allow states to decide important measures in their accountability standards
