MORGAN COUNTY, Ind.— A zipper merge has been implemented on S.R. 67 over Little White Lick Creek in Mooresville as Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Force Construction continues work on a $4.1 million superstructure replacement project that began in late October. Lane closures will remain in effect for the duration of the project, which is expected to be complete in fall 2020.
Due to the close proximity of both traffic signals and a railroad crossing, a zipper merge is being used at this location in place of INDOT’s standard “early merge” when traffic back-ups are present. Signage is in place to alert motorists of the merge, at which drivers should utilize both lanes of traffic until they reach the closed lane. Vehicles should alternate, or take turns when merging, in a zipper-like fashion. When no traffic back-up is present, motorists should continue to merge early, when safe to do so.
Crews will demolish existing bridge spans over the winter months and concrete pours will begin in the spring. Motorists are reminded to slow down, use extra caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones. In addition, drivers should not stop on railroad tracks.
