IMPD investigates deadly shooting on Indianapolis’ east side

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) and Homicide detectives are investigating after a man is found dead, another shot, and a suspect apprehended, across three locations on the city’s east side. The sequence of events are as follows:

Just after 9:20 a.m., IMPD officers were dispatched to a residence in the 6600 block of E 42nd St on reports of a person shot. Responding officers located a male victim inside a residence, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the face. EMS personnel responded and transported the victim to Eskenazi Hospital in serious but stable condition. Aggravated Assault detectives responded.

Just before 9:30 a.m., officers were then dispatched to the 4800 block of E 46th St on reports of a serious accident. Responding officers located two substantially damaged vehicles in the roadway – a maroon SUV and a black minivan. The driver of the maroon SUV was identified as allegedly being involved in the shooting on E 42nd St. The occupants in the black van suffered from minor injuries and the passenger was transported to Methodist hospital in good condition.

When officers arrived on scene of the crash, the alleged suspect was walking in a nearby grassy area with his shirt off, and appeared to be suffering from significant injuries that were actively bleeding. Officers spoke with the suspect and when they went to detain him, he began violently resisting officers. At one point the suspect kicked an officer in the chest, knocking them to the ground. Officers deployed the taser which was not effective with the first deployment, however on a second deployment, it was effective and allowed officers to handcuff the suspect. The suspect continued to actively resist when handcuffed which caused officers to restrain his legs as well. The suspect was then transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition. One officer received a minor injury during the struggle. Due to the officers being involved in a violent struggle with the suspect and the suspect’s critical condition, IMPD’s CIRT investigators were requested and responded to the scene to investigate as a precautionary measure. IMPD Accident investigators responded to conduct the accident investigation.

Just after 11:50 a.m., officers were then dispatched to the 6100 block of Raleigh Dr. Responding officers located an unresponsive male victim suffering from undisclosed trauma inside a residence. Medics responded and pronounced the victim dead on-scene. Homicide detectives responded to the scene. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to assist with identifying and collecting potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will be assisting with determining the exact cause and manner of death of the victim. The MCCO will release the name of the victim once proper next-of-kin notification has been made.

Detectives believe all three above incidents are related and they are working to determine exactly what transpired throughout the incidents. Detectives are in the process of taking formal statements from all known witnesses. If additional witnesses exist that have not yet talked with detectives, we urge them to call the IMPD Homicide Office at 317.327.3475.
